Spotlight on: Emily Melling
After a couple of months away our "Junkbox Presents" blog is BACK! This month features the incredible Emily Melling of Florence Studios.
Emily is a freelance Graphic Designer/Illustrator based in the UK on the South Coast & works on branding, packaging, editorial and illustration projects. Visual communication is at the heart of everything, working out who the client's audience is and how to distil complex information about a brand into visuals/layout work.
Since first starting freelancing about 2 years ago her work has evolved a lot. Beginning with almost entirely layout and typography-based logos then running things independently to gain the flexibility to explore new creative practices. Now there's a pretty even mix of drawing every day for solo projects and for client work. Emily is excited to push the more illustrative side of her work - especially in terms of hand-drawn letterforms.
Emily answers some ridiculously important questions for us here...

What is your all time favourite album?
Tricky one - the first thing that comes to mind is Idles - Ultra Mono. All go their music is a go-to for me.
Can you remember your favourite childhood game?
I actually think it was Spyro on PlayStation one, if that counts haha. It was re-relased a few years back and I'm playing it again now on PS4.
What's your favourite fast food & why?
I think Wagamama's on Deliveroo, love the packaging it comes in and I love Pad Thai.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
In year 11 me and my friends decided to enter the talent show dancing to a high-school musical song. We were dressed up as cheerleaders with homemade pom poms - it was carnage.
If you could remove one colour from the world forever, what is it?
Hmmmm, probably really bright 'sick' green. I don't think it would be missed.
What's your favourite type of Pizza & topping?
I'll eat pretty much any pizza but love Ham & Pineapple.
Cats or Dogs?
If I haddd to pick I would say dogs - we have a miniature Dachshund. But I do love cats too.
What's the strangest thing that's ever happened to you?
I don't think anything super strange has ever happened yet.
If you could be a pudding what would it be?
Chocolate fudge cake (warm, with no cream)
What was your first ever screen name?
I don't think I have ever had one - I guess in a way Florence Studios is one - it's what I called my freelance business and lots of people call me Florence instead of Emily which is all good, it's my middle name and I love it.
So... if you're in need of some seriously great Graphic Design work then Emily is your go-to person! When you see awesome Junkbox graphics you know who's to thank for them!
(spoiler, it's not us 😂)
